‘‘Its often a process of…. Slowly, slowly…. Sprint!’’
Mural art is one of those types of projects that I love mainly for its permanence. There’s a commitment to the work that leaves very little room for error. It’s this element that I find exciting. Also, the instant gratification of standing back and observing it on completion. Often void in design work as more often than not, the final usage can be weeks away. Seeing the design instantly in context and taking that into consideration in the proposal stage adds a little extra fizz to the making process.
I often get asked if I use projectors to map out the work (I know this is a popular method of approach to mural creations). I do not. Not because I feel it is cheating or anything but more as I feel the work should take a more organic approach. In this project the lettering is slightly more condensed than the proposal and not all lines are perfectly straight. But that is alright. These things offer the peice a more humanistic feel, you look closely you can see the linear work. The mapping out and initial proportional work takes time and it’s often a process of…. Slowly, slowly… Sprint!. Once the paint goes on its plain sailing from there on.
Im not averse to other techniques. I just see it like this, if the client wants the final piece to be so bang on point and accurate to the proposal then they’d be better served if I just sent it to print. A vinyl transfer would be much more clinical in its execution. Thankfully, I’ve not had that request as of yet.
Long live imperfections.
